Welcome back. In our activity this week, we are going to explore and graph where whales are sighted, but this time, we are going to focus on years. We are going to see if their distribution has changed over time. Are they in different places than they were a couple years ago?

Why might they change location? Think about these two scenarios when answering that question.

  1. I went to my favorite restaurant on a Sunday night. There was a band playing that would move around the restaurant. Whenever they were near me, I had a hard time hearing what my children were saying to me. I didn’t like it. I found out they play from 4-7. Guess what? I don’t plan on going again on Sunday night between 4 and 7.
  2. I was on vacation and went to my favorite restaurant. I look forward to it every year. When we got there, we found out that someone else was running the restaurant. The type of food was the same, but when it arrived, it didn’t look the same. It didn’t taste the same. We found a new favorite restaurant.

In both of these scenarios, I changed where I eat. Think about how that might relate to whales while you are doing this activity.

Before you head there, enjoy this video of a North Atlantic right whale feeding off the coast of Gloucester, MA in 2018. This was filmed from the beach! It was definitely a once in a decade moment! Thanks Martin Del Vecchio for capturing this amazing whale feeding!
