Right Whale Activity: Population – Where Do They Stand?

By Cynde McInnis, Year of the Right Whale Project Co-Coordinator

How many right whales are there?

That’s a really good question. Luckily, in 1986, the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium was created thanks to a collaboration of individuals from various research and conservation organizations, shipping and fishing industries, technical experts, U.S. and Canadian government agencies, and state and provincial authorities. Together they work to understand right whales.

This activity is one that I demonstrated at the National Marine Educators Association conference last summer in NH. That version was to be led by a teacher. I revised it this time so that individuals can do the lesson. It will help you understand what we know about the demographics of the right whale population. You will see what is happening to the population and why. Warning: we need to all work together to make this story have a happy ending!!
