Year of the Right Whale: Infinity

Hello!

Welcome to the Year of the Right Whale 2021! Or, as we like to call it, the Year of the Right Whale Infinity! We want to educate the public and celebrate right whales until they are no longer critically endangered.

What is Year of the Right Whale? It is a project co-coordinated by the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation and The Whalemobile to protect the North Atlantic right whale through celebration, education, and action.

WE, all humans, are the right whale’s greatest threat, and only hope.

It is up to us to save this remarkable animal, and we invite you to join us!

Initially, the Year of the Right Whale was supposed to be 2020, but, as with many things, that did not go as planned. While some of our initiatives and virtual events were successful, it is time to regroup, and re-launch in 2021 and beyond to raise awareness and inspire action.

What’s in store for the Year of the Right Whale?

  • WEEKLY BLOGS– Topics will include anatomy, history, personal stories, research updates, calf updates, ecology, news and events.
  • FACEBOOK LIVE EVENTS– We hope to have frequent Facebook Live events with experts and enthusiasts, where we will be taking YOUR questions about right whales.
  • CURRICULUM– We plan to reach teachers and school children through virtual meetings on a variety of topics, also including Q&A sessions with experts. You’ll get to meet a naturalist, do arts and crafts, and learn about right whales and the Gulf of Maine ecosystem.
  • BOOTH IN A BOX– We will re-launch our Booth in a Box program. More information will be coming in a blog soon.

Our audience for the Year of the Right Whale is everyone–those living near right whale habitats along the east coast, as well as people living hundreds of miles from the ocean. We hope to inspire people of all ages to love the ocean home of the right whale and countless other plants and animals.

Our first Facebook Live event will be on Monday, February 8th. During this event, you will have the opportunity to chat with our two coordinators, Jen Kennedy of the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation, and Cynde McInnis of The Whalemobile. If you have questions for either of them, please post them in the comment section. In the meantime, feel free to browse other blog posts, the rest of the Year of the Right Whale website, and our lesson plans for more information.

I look forward to celebrating the North Atlantic right whale with you all!
