The Benefits of Volunteering

As we say goodbye to 2019 and hello to 2020 a lot of people begin writing up New Year’s resolutions and resolve to accomplish a goal or better themselves in the new year. Resolutions such as spend more time with family, get outside more, or give back to the community. Luckily Blue Ocean Society can help you achieve all of these resolutions, with fun and engaging volunteer opportunities! We have a small staff here, so we rely on engaged and excited volunteers to help us achieve our mission of protecting marine life here in the Gulf of Maine. Volunteer work is a wonderful way to give back to your community and have fun, but there are many benefits of volunteer work that people don’t often consider.

Volunteering can allow you to learn something new, like new skills, cool new facts about marine animals, or what microplastics are and how to sort for them. It can also allow you to get out in your community and see it in a new light. While volunteering, you can meet new friends and make connections in your community as well. It can also help you during times of transitions in life between jobs or into retirement by providing structure and purpose.

Overall, volunteer work is important and makes you happier in the end, so why not volunteer for an amazing organization such as Blue Ocean Society? Whether it be volunteering at our Blue Ocean Discovery Center in the summer or going to one of our monthly beach clean ups at Jenness Beach, we have fun, fulfilling volunteer opportunities for the whole family.
