Adopt a Beach in 2020

A great way to help marine life is by picking up litter. And if you want to help even more,  join our Adopt a Beach program!

Adopt-a-Beach groups  “adopt” a local beach and agree to clean it at least once per month for a year.  At cleanups, you’ll be picking up litter while recording your findings and contributing to our long-term data on marine pollution.

Beach cleanups are a great way for you to have a lasting impact on the health of the Gulf of Maine. You’ll pick up litter before it impacts marine life (or goes across the ocean). We use the data to inspire behavior change and figure out solutions. Plus, you’ll get exercise and enjoy time near the ocean.

Our Adopt-a-Beach program runs from southern Maine to Cape Ann, MA. We have several beaches available for adoption right now, including beaches in York, ME, Rye, Hampton, and Seabrook, NH and Salisbury Beach, MA. To get started, read our Adopt-a-Beach handbook and then send in your Adopt-a-Beach application.

If you want a less structured experience, you can also use our Digital Cleanup Kit to download all the resources you’ll need to do a cleanup. This includes instructions and a supply list, plus a copy of our data card. The kit also includes information on how to collect data using our list on the Marine Debris Tracker app. Want an activity for your company, club or other group? We also happily arrange cleanups for groups.

Our next public beach cleanups are January 11 and February 8 at Jenness Beach in Rye. Hope to see you there. Join us in making the Gulf of Maine a better place in 2020!
