Programs Coordinator Position

Summary: Coordinates and delivers Blue Ocean Society’s existing educational programs, designs new programs as appropriate, and solicits new programs.

Reports to: Executive Director

Responsibilities:

Coordinate Educational Programs

  • Communicate with schools and groups to schedule programs, including in-school programs with our life-sized inflatable whale, other outreach programs and beach cleanups; invoicing programs.
  • Deliver BOS’s existing programs (including in-school programs, beach cleanups and tabling at local fairs/festivals).
  • Work with Volunteer Coordinator to train and schedule volunteers to assist with programs, and encourage cleanup groups to join our Adopt-a-Beach Program.
  • Reach out to potential clients (schools, organizations) to increase program bookings.
  • Follow-up after programs to thank and survey clients.
  • Compile program data, including number of students and adults served.
  • Represent BOS at public events as appropriate.
  • Assist in planning annual Educator Workshop and public program series.
  • Ensure BOS educational programs are relevant to latest content standards and update or design new programs as needed.
  • Regularly solicit feedback from clients about programs through surveys, emails, and phone calls.
  • Maintain educational program equipment as necessary.

Outreach

  • Write blog posts, newsletter articles and social media posts relevant to educational programs and general outreach.
  • Other duties as required to perform this position successfully.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in marine biology, education or related field
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated, positive, detail-oriented
  • Familiarity with Gulf of Maine marine species, particularly marine mammals and coastal invertebrates
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working in marine science education or related field
  • Knowledge of relevant educational standards/curriculum development experience a plus
  • Enjoy working with children and the general public
  • Skilled in MS Office software (Word, Excel, Publisher)
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Flexibility in scheduling – some weekend and evening work required
  • Must be comfortable lifting and moving program equipment
  • Must be willing to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Must have reliable transportation and a vehicle large enough to transport educational materials.
  • Be able to work with other staff members to answer office phone and respond to inquiries effectively.
  • Successful applicant will ideally be able to attend training in early August and start shortly thereafter.
  • Once hired, a background check will be performed.

Salary and Benefits

  • This is a part-time position with expected hours of 15-25 hours/week during November-March and 30-38 hours/week during April-October. There is a possibility that this will become a full-time position depending on funding and program bookings.
  • Pay starts at $12-15/hour, depending upon experience.
  • Scheduling is somewhat flexible. Some evenings and weekends required.
  • No health benefits are offered at this time, although there will be an opportunity to review health insurance options in the future. Employee may purchase company dental plan
  • Paid holidays and vacation, cell phone reimbursement, travel reimbursement
  • Telecommuting for some hours is an option
