This is the second-largest shark species
in the world (second only to the whale shark), reaching lengths of 30-40
feet! Amazingly, these sharks feed only on plankton and
don't even have real teeth! They feed using gill rakers, which
collect plankton as the shark filters water into its mouth and out its
gills. These sharks were once hunted in great numbers because of
the enormous amount of oil contained in their liver. Today, they
are a frequent sighting in the Gulf of Maine. |
