Beach cleanup

Teachers and students: join us at a local beach for a beach cleanup or a whole day of learning!

A Unique Environmental Field Trip… Beach Cleanups

Beach cleanup with school groupWe'll meet you at a local beach for a beach cleanup! The format of this program is usually as follows:

- Students, teachers and chaperones meet Blue Ocean Society staff at the beach (we will determine the beach at the time of booking).

- We give an educational orientation that includes an overview of why we clean the beach, the cleanup process, and how to record findings on data cards. We'll work with you to tailor this orientation to your learning needs and what your students have already focused on in class (if applicable).

- The students split into groups of 3-5 students each and receive supplies and data cards. Each group assigns a recorder, a recycle bag holder, a trash bag holder and a "picker-upper". We provide all supplies but happily take donations of gloves and trash bags.

- Students clean the beach for 45-90 minutes (depending on schedule and age range of group)

- Students meet back at starting point for a trash weigh-in and wrap-up discussion on what they found. Discussion points may include the most common types of trash found, the strangest items students found, and the implications for the environment and for humans.

Our staff is available for a pre-field trip presentation at your school. We'll bring a slide show about marine pollution and its effects, overview the cleanups and recent data, and have hands-on demonstrations and discussion.

Our cleanup data is also accessible to your class for further analysis and projects back at school.

Day at the Beach Field Trip

Spend a day at the beach with us! Sometimes schools would like to spend more time at the beach than a one-hour cleanup. We can set up a day for you at a local beach that incorporates a variety of activities and is tailored to your time constraints and learning needs. Activities could include:

- An interactive presentation on marine pollution and its effects on local marine lifeTide pooling in New Castle

- Beach cleanup

- Scavenger hunt

- Guided tide pooling

- Program teaching students about tide pool animals and plants, followed by tide pooling

- Group research activity involving tide pools

- Research activity involving cleanup data

This field trip includes a background packet for teachers which includes suggested classroom activities, and can also include a pre-field trip program at your school. Contact us for details!

 Beach Cleanup Goals & Objectives

  • Introduce students to data collection, standardization of data and how it can be applied to the “real world”
  • Familiarize students with different types of debris, its effect on the marine environment and good environmental stewardship principles
  • Teach students about Gulf of Maine marine life and interactions with their habitat

Adopt a Beach

Want to make a longer commitment?  Adopt a beach!  We are looking for schools to adopt sites for monthly cleanups. This is a great way to teach students environmental stewardship, fulfill community service requirements, and incorporate an outing into your existing lesson plans!
