Other Educational Opportunities

Here are some other great things to do in our area as part of your marine learning experience!

Beach Cleanup

Spend 1-2 hours cleaning a local beach and collect data as part of a national and local monitoring program.  Includes brief presentation about the monitoring program, the effects of trash on marine life and our quality of life and information on marine life in the Gulf of Maine.  Participants help collect data on the types of trash picked up and learn about our trash reporting system.  All materials are provided, although participants are suggested to wear comfortable closed-toed shoes and dress in layers.  More information.

Tide Pool Walk

Explore tide pool areas at a local beach and look for crabs, sea stars, periwinkles, barnacles and more.  Learn about intertidal marine life and the adaptations necessary for them to survive in their ever-changing habitat.  The tidepool walk can only be done at certain times of day, and can last from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Whale Watch

Spend 4-5 hours out at sea looking for the largest animals in the world!  Sightings are different every day, but frequently sighted species are finback, humpback and minke whales, Atlantic white-sided dolphins, basking sharks, ocean sunfish, harbor seals and a variety of seabirds.  You’ll have the opportunity to interact with our research scientist and, learn to collect data and identify species. Hands-on demonstrations are available.  Whale watch schedule varies.  Currently, we work with two local whale watch boats, although we are hoping to expand our network:
