Blue Ocean Society News
It’s hard to believe it’s the end of February already. As we round
the corner towards spring, we’re thinking about hiring summer staff,
starting to book spring educational programs, making plans to open
our touch tank in Portsmouth, and already gearing up for the
September Coastal Cleanup!
We had an exciting bit of news this month – we received our
final approval for funding from the
New
Hampshire Coastal Program to continue our beach cleanups,
Adopt-a-Beach program and educational programs this year! We will
be coordinating the Coastal Cleanup in September and are already
looking for an intern to help us coordinate the event, and schools
and volunteers to participate. For more information on the Coastal
Cleanup and how you can be involved,
click here. We thank the NHCP for their support again this year!
One reason I’m especially glad about this funding is that it again
offers us the opportunity to provide discounted educational programs
to schools and groups within the local area. We have also
established a Marine Conservation Education Fund and are hoping to
get sponsorship through this fund to help provide low-cost programs
for schools in other areas, too! If you work with a school and are
interested in having us visit with our inflatable whale, traveling
tide pools, or interactive marine pollution program,
click here for more information. If you are a business
interested in learning about the benefits of sponsoring these
programs, give us a call at 603-431-0260 or send an e-mail to
development@blueoceansociety.org!
We are hiring for a few positions this spring, and are also
continuing our beach cleanups and looking for more Adopt-a-Beach
groups – see below for more details!

Ocean Enthusiasts Needed!

As spring rolls around, our staff increases from about 3 in the
winter to about 15 in the summer, our busiest season! We are
looking to fill several positions, both paid and unpaid:
-
Marine Education & Research Internships: Work with us in
education and research aboard whale watch boats this summer! This
full-time internship, geared toward college students, will give you
the opportunity to get hands-on experience in marine research and
education. Application deadline: March 1. There may also be the
opportunity for others (both students and adults) to volunteer
part-time aboard the boats during the summer.
-
Coastal Cleanup Intern: Help coordinate an event that involves
1,000+ people annually in the Seacoast! This is a paid internship
involving planning both public and student cleanups in September
along with a variety of other responsibilities. This is a job for an
outgoing individual who loves the coast and is committed to
environmental protection.
-
Tide Pool Educator: This is a volunteer position at our touc h
tank in Portsmouth that involves introducing the public to the
fascinating animals and plants that inhabit local tide pools, and
conducting educational demonstrations, interacting with children,
and promoting our mission aboard Isles of Shoals cruises. Positions
are available full- or part-time to both students and adults.
Please assist us in filling these positions by passing along this
information to anyone who may be interested. Thank you!

A Spot of Sand to Call Your Own

We’ve had lots of interest in our Adopt-a-Beach program so
far in 2007, and have recently secured groups to adopt Fort Stark in
New Castle, a section of North Beach in Hampton, and Long Sands
Beach in York, ME.
We
are still looking for groups to adopt sections of Hampton and
Seabrook Beach, and help us expand inland by adopting sites along
the Piscataqua River and Great Bay. This program only requires a
commitment of 1-2 hours a month, and provides the excuse to get out
on the beach! Our Adopt-a-Beach groups helped remove close to 6
tons of trash from NH beaches last year. Won’t you join us this
year? The program is open to families, clubs, school classes,
businesses, and other groups. For more information,
jen@blueoceansociety.org.
