Activity 1: Make your own whale!

We can tell humpback whales  apart by the patterns on the underside of their tail.  Humpback tails are like our fingerprints - they're different for every whale.  Each whale had a pattern on it's tail which is all white, all black, or somewhere in between.  Here are some examples:

marbletail.JPG (6827 bytes) sealtail.JPG (20335 bytes) Trident.JPG (14953 bytes) Satula.JPG (4598 bytes) Fan.jpg (133826 bytes)
"Marble" "Seal" "Trident" "Satula" "Fan"

(Click on each picture above to see a bigger one).

Scientists give each whale a name to make it easier to remember them.  The name usually describes a marking on the whale's tail, or fluke.  "Marble" was named because of a round circle on his tail that looks like a marble. "Fan" was named because of a fan-shaped mark on its tail.

Here's your chance to name your own whale!

Here is a whale with an empty tail.  Click here to print out this picture  and use it to make your own whale!  Draw markings on the whale's tail and then name your whale!
