Internship Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question not answered here?  E-mail us or call (603) 431-0260.

Do you accept younger students?

Our internships are geared toward ages 18 and above, and particularly college students.  Younger students should contact us separately about volunteer opportunities.  A great place for you to start is our touch tank, where we are looking for educators to assist on shorter cruises during the summer!  Click here for more information: http://www.blueoceansociety.org/tank/ttintern.htm.

Where do interns live?

Interns are responsible for finding their own housing. Summer sublets are usually available near the University of New Hampshire, which is about 20 minutes from our office, and 20-45 minutes from the whale watch boats.  If you are accepted to the internship, you can work with your fellow interns to find shared housing or look for your own room/apartment. The University of New Hampshire's housing list is a good place to start: http://www.unhmub.com/housinglist/. (The closest towns to our office are Portsmouth, Rye, Exeter, Hampton, New Castle, Newington, Dover, Durham and Madbury, and student housing is most plentiful in Dover and Durham).   We'll help you however we can.

How can I earn extra income?

Since our area is popular with tourists in the summer, many places hire people for summer jobs, so it's generally not too hard to get a job in the area.  Also, many of the boats we work with are looking for part-time crew, so it's possible to  work on a boat part-time and intern part-time. We try to hire people early so that they have time to wrap up housing and part-time jobs before they get here.  HOWEVER, we do expect the internship to be your first priority and expect that you'll work your other job's schedule around the intern schedule.  Since full-time interns can gain the best experience here, qualified applicants who can work 30+ hours per week and not get another job will receive priority.

Do you accept international students?

We do accept international students, but you should keep in mind that you will be responsible for providing your own transportation (or carpooling) while you're here.  Public transportation here is not readily available, so if this is an issue, you may want to consider internship opportunities in a larger city or in places where it is more feasible to walk to work.

How much research will be done during this internship?

If you choose to do research as part of your focus, the bulk of your time will be spent on whale watch boats (where you'll collect data for 1-3 hours at a time, depending on whale and debris sightings) with additional time spent in the office working on data entry and cataloging projects. All summer interns will eventually learn how to collect data and enter data into a database and be responsible for completing their own research project.   Fall & winter interns will spend more time cataloging and entering data.

There are many research opportunities available for those motivated to put in the time. You have the option to complete a special research project, which may involve collecting your own data or using our data to answer a research question. We will assist you in preparing abstracts to submit to marine mammal conferences if you wish to present your project to the scientific community.
