'Twas the Night Before Christmas...
A Gulf of Maine Poem

'Twas the night before Christmas, and
along the Gulf of Maine
Not a breeze was blowing,
There was no movement from the weathervane
The stockings were hung on the boat with care,
In hopes that Blue Ocean Society soon would be there!

The children were nestled all snug in their beds.
While visions of whales danced in their heads
And mamma in her fleece,
And I in my pre-shrunk long-sleeve Blue Ocean tee,
Had just settled down after a whale watching day of glee.

When out on the sea there arose such a clatter
I sprang from my bunk to see what was the matter
Off the port side, there was a big SPLASH!
It was a huge breach from our good old friend Flask.

The moon lit up the huge white tail
Of our mascot, this male humpback whale
Who we first met back in 1982.
Although he’s our mascot, you can adopt him, too!

Now what to my wandering eyes did appear
Other adopt-a-whales - spouting far and near
Pinball! Satula! Owl! Are some –
Also Ladder, Fjord, Trigger and more to come!

And then, in a twinkling, as they all swam away
I knew that our beach cleanups had helped in some way.
While the whales are down south,
we’ll keep picking up debris
So when they return there will be many whales to see.

Come join us this winter for a cleanup or volunteer night,
Meet our inflatable whale, or visit our informative web site!
And to all our supporters and friends so dear—
We wish you a
happy holiday and a litter-free New Year!
