The Story of Our Straw Wreath

At the very beginning of 2017, we asked you all to join us in Skipping the Straw. Throughout the year we have made efforts to talk to local businesses, conduct cleanups and educate students about the dangers to marine life that come from straws. So, when we were approached to make a wreath for the annual Festival of Trees we knew exactly what we wanted to make it out of!

In 2016, we collected 1598 straws from local beaches. During a cleanup in August at Salisbury Beach, a group from Financial Force helped pick up 200 straws from the beach. We held on to these straws and made the wreath entirely of these straws. We wanted to use as little plastic as possible so the center ring was a straw (the other type of straw!) wreath. We decorated using ribbon and then painted the straws white.

Although we love the finished product, we don’t encourage going out and purchasing plastic straws to make this wreath. Instead, how about collecting all the straws you accidentally use in 2018 and joining a few cleanups so you can make your own wreath next year! If you haven’t already, join our campaign and pledge to stay straw free another year!
