How to Make Your Own Body Scrub

With all this craziness going on, it’s hard to keep up with sustainable habits…and sometimes even impossible. It’s now prohibited to bring your reusable cups and bags to shops and grocery stores (and rightfully so). With all this backtracking on sustainable habits, it can be discouraging to find ways to keep up with your eco-conscious lifestyles!

DIY (do it yourself) projects offer an easy way to stay sustainable, save money, and give you an activity to do with all your downtime! DIY’s are a sustainable option because you can put them in jars and containers you already own, therefore eliminating you from having to buy another disposable container or plastic item. DIY items are normally made with all-natural products too, which means fewer chemicals on your body and down our drain systems into oceans. Plus, they save you money since most product recipes yield a larger amount of product; more product means it lasts longer and saves you from buying more. Not only that but they’re a fun and creative activity for you to learn on your own!

Below is a DIY body scrub recipe inspired from the blog site Going Zero Waste! This body scrub is a great exfoliate with a sugar base that can be used in the shower or as a face wash a couple times a week! All the materials can easily be found online or at any grocery store. It’s important to know of any prior allergies or skin sensitivities you have before fully applying a product, so make sure to test the product on a small patch of your skin before completely drenching yourself with it in the shower!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 Cup of Sugar
  • 1/3 Cup of Olive Oil or Sweet Almond Oil
  • 2 Tablespoons of Raw Honey
  • 1 Zest of Lemon
  • The Juice of Half the Lemon
  • 2 Table Spoons of an Optional Add-In*

Additional Add-Ins Can Include:

  • Dried Rosemary (grind it very fine)
  • Dried Green Tea
  • Crushed Rose Petals
  • A few drops of any essential oil (be sure it’s the kind safe for skin contact).

All you have to do once you’ve acquired your ingredients is mix them all into a small jar! It’s as simple as that! Try to use a container you own already such as a mason jar lying around, rather than buying a new one.  Just make sure to zest your lemon before you juice it! Stay safe, and have fun creating your own body scrub!
