No, you can't take it
home with you...but this is a great way to learn more about
local marine life and take a step toward protecting their habitat! For a $25 donation,

Finback Whales: The World's
Second-Largest Species!
"Ladder"
A presumed male who often
visits Jeffreys Ledge! Ladder's name came from the ladder-like propeller
scar on his right side. Ladder has been seen several times this season,
and new research shows that he is seen almost all of the time with at
least one other whale!
"Comet"
This strikingly-scarred whale has been seen regularly over the last two
years, after a 5-year hiatus from 2000-2005!
June 2007 update: Comet was just sighted with a calf, the first we know
of!
"Trigger"
A female named for the shape of her
dorsal fin. In 2001, she brought a calf to Jeffreys Ledge! July
2007 update: Trigger was seen with a calf, the second we know of!
"Fjord"
This easily-identified whale has been
seen almost every year since 1996! Fjord has already been seen at least
a couple times in 2007!
Humpback Whales: Big-Winged New
Englanders!
"Owl"
First identified in 1986, Owl was named because of a black spot on each
of the white patches on her fluke, which resemble owl eyes. Owl
was seen in May 2008 with a new calf, her fifth!

"Pinball"
A female born in 1989, Pinball
has brought several calves to Jeffrey's Ledge during the summer. In August
2007, she was seen on Jeffreys Ledge with Owl, and several other adult
humpbacks! In winter 2008,Pinball was sighted in Turks &
Caicos with her fifth calf!
“Satula” A frequent visitor to our area,
Satula sadly appeared in 2002 missing his dorsal fin, but has been seen
every year since and appears healthy!
“Flask” A male first sighted in 1981, Flask
is our unofficial mascot, as his tail adorns our t-shirts and
sweatshirts!
Atlantic White-Sided Dolphin
"Stripes"
Adopt this
representative of our most common dolphin species! Traveling in
pods of up to several hundred animals, this dolphin species is
recognized by the white stripe along its side.
Other Marine Animals
"Gills" Gills is one of
many basking sharks that inhabit the Gulf of Maine. These are the
second-largest shark, growing up to 40 feet! Amazingly though, they
feed only on tiny plankton!
"Sunny" Sunny is an ocean
sunfish. These are the largest bony fish species, sometimes reaching
diameters of 10 feet across!
