Touch Tank Educator Internship/Volunteer Position

Want to work outside all summer? On the water? With great people and cool animals? And make a difference in the marine environment Touch Tank Intern with Visitorwhile you do it? Then you’d be a perfect volunteer for our Marine Life Touch Tank!

We are seeking interns/volunteers for our Marine Life Touch Tank in downtown Portsmouth, NH. This position will give you the opportunity to get hands-on experience in marine research and education. With the supervision of our touch tank coordinator, volunteers teach kids and adults who visit the tank all about the local marine ecosystem. They also care for and handle the creatures of the tank, including sea stars, urchins, anemones, crabs, marine snails, and other invertebrates. You will also have the opportunities to lead story times and other activities.

Volunteers should be friendly, hard-working and enthusiastic about our mission: to inspire passion in people to conserve the marine environment.

The position is open to anyone over 16. Younger volunteers may be accepted if accompanied by a parent. Ideal candidates will be outgoing, creative, have a background in marine science or related field (or be willing to learn quickly!), be willing to work outside in all weather conditions, and enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with the public.

Training and reference materials will be provided. We will work with you to obtain college credit if desired. Scheduling can be flexible. The touch tank is open June 25-September 4, 2011 on Wednesdays through Sundays from 8:30 AM-2:00 PM. Because our season is short, volunteers are encouraged to work at least one shift per week.
